More commonly known as “Santiago Centro” to differentiate it from the capital, the Santiago district is home to the historic center and houses most of the state offices.
A key player in the founding of the city in 1541, and with a clear Spanish influence, this densely populated area of Santiago is now very well connected to the rest of the capital’s communes. It is an excellent option for living if you seek to have everything at hand: services, commerce, education, and recreation.
In the old town—the “downtown”—offices and shops dominate, while to the south of Avenida Libertador Bernardo O’Higgins (“La Alameda”) and to the west of the Pan-American Highway (Route 5), more residential neighborhoods extend.
The center is also characterized by its predominantly old buildings and considerable traffic on its streets. Recently, numerous modern apartment buildings have been constructed, many of which are listed on this website!
Renting an apartment in this part of Santiago is attractive for those seeking moderate prices and proximity to major universities or state institutions. Many companies also have their headquarters here, offering easy access to the rest of the city: there are good connections to the northern, western, and southern areas of Santiago. The metro’s Line 1 also provides access to the eastern part of the capital.
